Athos is the third peninsula of Halkidiki; home to Ouranoupolis and the amazing monastic site of Mount Athos. In fact, there are over a dozen monasteries on the peninsula scattered around the holy mountain. Visitors are welcome to some of these sites but only with a Diamonitirion ( a special clearance dispensed by the monks).
As well as the monasteries, Athos has a number of charming towns and villages to visit. Near to Ouranoupolis, there's the tranquil and picturesque villages of Nea Rhoda and Aristotelis and the exquisite island of Ammouliani (the only inhabited island of Halkidiki). The most beautiful beaches are located near Olympiada, Nea Rodha and on Ammouliani island. From Olympiada towards Ierissos, there are wild bays that you can visit if you're adventurous.
Athos is very much a place to recharge your batteries away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Transfer from Thessaloniki airport approx. 2 hours.
