Day 1 - Fly overnight to Shanghai

Day 3 - Explore Shanghai

Shanghai is China's great metropolis, whereeast and west collide on streets lined withfuturistic skyscrapers and 10th-centurytemples. Today's explorations include thetraditional Yu Garden, a silk mill anda stop in the old town. Also take in sweepingviews of Shanghai's magnificent colonial andmodern architecture atop the Jinmao Tower.End the day on a panoramic Huangpu Rivercruise followed by traditional Shanghainesecuisine.

Day 4 - Zhujiajiao Water Town

Visit Zhujiajiao, one of Shanghai's sleepy watertowns, built on an old canal system once usedto transport goods all over imperial China.The town's narrow alleyways exude old-worldcharm, whilst the waterways are lined withancient buildings and crossed by stone bridges.Return to Shanghai for a stroll along the iconicBund and bustling Nanjing Road.

Day 5 - Fly to Xian

Fly to Xian, the ancient former capital with ahistory spanning 3,100 years. This afternoon,stop at a local brewery for a refreshingbeer tasting, then walk through the livelyatmospheric alleys of the Muslim Quarter whichare lined with food stalls. Here you will gain aninsight into the city's fascinating culture andsignificance as the start of the Silk Road.

Day 6 - Terracotta Warriors

After their fortuitous discovery in the 1970s,the Terracotta Army of China's first emperor,Qin Shi Huang, has intrigued visitors eversince. Spend the morning viewing theenigmatic ranks of life-sized warriors andhorses who stand in their original formationsat the exact location they were excavated.Also visit the workshop of the craftsmenwho recreate terracotta warriors in the styleof their ancient counterparts. Later, strollon the beautifully preserved 14th-centuryancient city walls that enclose Xian's oldtown. Tonight, feast on traditional Shui Jiaodumplings before a captivating performance ofTang Dynasty dancing.

Day 7 - Bullet train to Beijing

Day 8 - Imperial Beijing

Head to the heart of Beijing and strollacross vast Tiananmen Square, one of theworld's largest public spaces. Step into thegrandeur of the Forbidden City, a UNESCOlistedcomplex of over 900 buildings spreadacross 180 acres. Passing through the Gateof Supreme Harmony, explore a world oncereserved for emperors. Next, unwind in thepeaceful surrounds of the Temple of Heaven,an elegant masterpiece of Ming architecture.Later, enjoy a leisurely stroll through Beijing'shutongs, some dating back 700 years. Thesenarrow alleys are known for their labyrinthinelayout, traditional courtyard homes, and senseof community that has been preserved forcenturies. Meet a local family to get a glimpseof old Beijing's rich culture and experiencefirst-hand the unique hutong way of life.

Day 9 - The Great Wall

This morning is dedicated to China's mosticonic sight – the Great Wall. Taking a walkon this incredible structure is the best wayto appreciate both the sheer magnificenceof the wall itself and the dramatic scenerythat it crosses. Stop by a jade factory thenspend the afternoon strolling through theidyllic landscapes of the Summer Palaceand the traditional Chinese gardens. Today'ssightseeing is the perfect way to build up yourappetite for Beijing's most famous delicacy –Peking duck.
