Welcome to Argentina. Your expedition begins in Buenos Aires, a city where the air is thick with the scent of grilled asado and the sound of distant violins. You will be met and transferred to your hotel to settle in before meeting your National Geographic Expedition Leader, National Geographic Expedition Expert and fellow travellers. This evening, immerse yourself in the soul of the city at an intimate and immersive tango performance. Soak in the history and cultural significance of this passionate dance before gathering for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant to toast the beginning of your Patagonian exploration.
Buenos Aires reveals its layered identity today, beginning in the grand tree-lined streets of Recoleta before moving through the political heart of the city - past the iconic obelisk and Plaza de Mayo - to the cobblestones of San Telmo and the vivid murals of La Boca. The afternoon takes an unexpected turn across the Riachuelo River via the historic 1914 transporter bridge to the Isla Maciel community, where local guides share a side of the city that few visitors ever encounter. Vibrant street art, empanadas, and the ritual of mate (a traditional tea) tell a story of resilience and identity that no museum could replicate. The remainder of the day is yours to savour the European-influenced elegance of the capital at your own pace.
Leave the bustle of the capital behind and fly deep into the heart of southern Patagonia. Arrive in El Calafate, a gateway city nestled on the shores of the milky-blue Lago Argentino. As evening falls, enjoy a rare opportunity to meet with a local glaciologist. Gain a scientific perspective on the massive ice fields that define this region and learn how these geographic giants shape the landscape. Continue the immersion with a visit to the Glaciarium Museum, where high-tech displays bring the history of the glaciers to life. The evening is free to enjoy on your own.
Prepare for an encounter with one of the world's most iconic natural wonders: the Perito Moreno Glacier. Stand on the boardwalks and feel the chill radiating from the ice as you listen for the "white thunder"-the crack and roar of massive shards calving into the water below. Wander the various viewpoints to see the jagged blue walls from every angle, with the opportunity to take an optional boat ride to approach the towering ice face. After a morning in the presence of this frozen giant, return to El Calafate for a free afternoon. Tonight, gather for a traditional Patagonian feast at a local restaurant, celebrating the flavours of the region.
Board a boat for a full-day navigation of Lago Argentino, where the water is a brilliant turquoise fed by ancient ice. Sail past the towering Spegazzini, Heim, and Peineta glaciers, surrounded by the dramatic silhouettes of the Patagonian mountains. In the comfort of the Captain's Club, enjoy preferential seating and the insights of a local guide as you glide past icebergs. Step ashore for a walk through an old-growth forest trail at Bahía de los Glaciares, leading to a panoramic refuge for a spectacular lunch at the base of the glacier. Return to El Calafate for an evening at leisure.
Journey across the vast pampa, watching the horizon for guanacos and rheas as you cross the border into Chile. Arrive at your lodge situated at the southern limit of Torres del Paine National Park, a pristine wilderness and sanctuary of granite towers, azure lakes, and golden grasslands. Upon arrival, meet with a local guide to learn about the unique natural history and geology of the park as well as the various ways to discover it. Settle into your room as the twilight turns the famous granite "horns" deep shades of purple and orange. Enjoy a delicious dinner at the lodge, preparing for a full immersion into one of the world's most spectacular landscapes.
Today is yours to explore the jagged beauty of Torres del Paine where you can choose one of a variety of included activities. If you are looking for active options, join a guided walk to the Cuernos viewpoint for a staggering look at the park's central massif, or wander the Aonikenk Trail in search of local wildlife and ancient cave paintings. Alternatively, take a full-day panoramic vehicle tour to reach the park's most hidden corners, or board a boat to witness the sheer grey walls of the Grey Glacier. This evening gather back together in the warmth of the lodge to share stories of the day over a delectable meal.
A transfer to Puerto Natales, precedes the flight north to Santiago, a city that feels like a different world entirely: sophisticated, sun-drenched, and framed by the snow-capped Andes. This evening, the expedition concludes as it began, around a shared table, with a farewell dinner that traces the journey from the tango halls of Buenos Aires to the wind-scoured edges of Patagonia - and everything extraordinary in between.
Your expedition to Chile and Argentina concludes today. In the morning, enjoy a guided panoramic city tour of Santiago to see the historic Moneda Palace, the bustling Plaza de Armas, and the green slopes of Cerro Santa Lucia. Take a final look at the snow-capped Andes that have been your constant companion throughout the journey. The tour ends back at the hotel, where airport transfers are provided throughout the day for your departure back home.
Departing flights should depart no earlier than 5pm. Most long-haul international flights out of Santiago depart in the evening.

We invite you to view these travel times and details as an approximate guide rather than a strict contract, and we kindly ask that you review a final copy of your Trip Details a few days prior to departure to ensure you have the most current information for your upcoming expedition.

Your departure flight must depart no earlier than 5pm on Day 9.
When deciding what to pack, considerations will vary based on your specific itinerary, the regions you are visiting, and the season in which you are travelling. Generally speaking, we recommend packing thoughtfully and keeping your luggage to one checked bag at a manageable weight to facilitate seamless transitions throughout your expedition.
In addition to your primary luggage, you will also require a small day pack or shoulder bag. This smaller bag is essential for keeping your camera, water, and personal items close at hand during day walks, excursions, and daily explorations.
While personal spending habits naturally vary, we recommend factoring in your individual preferences for shopping, tipping, and beverages to ensure a seamless experience. In addition to these day-to-day comforts, we kindly ask that you maintain access to a minimum of USD $200 (or its equivalent) as a dedicated emergency fund; though exceptionally rare, unpredictable circumstances such as changing weather patterns or natural events may occasionally necessitate a shift from our planned route, and this reserve ensures we can navigate any path ahead with peace of mind.
No, international flights are generally not included in the price of your tour.
However, on some combo tours travelling between two different countries, international flights are included as part of the itinerary and price of the tour. Please speak to your GCO or booking agent for further details.
In addition, check-in times and baggage allowances/restrictions vary by airline and can change at any time. For the most up-to-date information for your flight, please contact your airline. We recommend checking in online in advance to avoid potential delays at the airport.
he currency in Argentina is the Argentine Peso (ARS), and in Chile, the Chilean Peso (CLP).
Credit cards and debit cards are very useful for cash advances. Visa cards are the most widely accepted cards. While ATMs are widely available, there are no guarantees that your credit or debit cards will actually work in Latin America. Check with your bank.
You should be aware that to purchase products or services on a credit card a fee of 5%-10% usually applies.
Do not rely on credit or debit cards as your only source of money, a combination of US dollar cash and cards is best. Please bear in mind that cost of living in the southern cone countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile) is much higher than the rest of South America, and in the case of Argentina, more comparable with Europe. Always take more rather than less, as you don't want to spoil the trip by constantly feeling short of funds.
We recommend bringing USD in cash for the Argentinean portion of this tour as it is easier than using a credit card or withdrawing ARS from an ATM. USD currency is accepted in travel agencies for booking optional activities.
CURRENCY EXCHANGE TIP: Please be advised that slightly torn notes, notes that have been heavily marked or are faded may be difficult to exchange. It is best to bring notes in fairly good condition, in denominations lower than 100USD (or equivalent).
As currency exchange rates can fluctuate often we ask that you refer to the following website for daily exchange rates: www.xe.com
To ensure a seamless and elevated experience throughout your National Geographic Signature departure, gratuities have been fully taken care of for all included meals, activities, and luggage porterage.
On our National Geographic Signature tours, tipping is included for all included activities and meals, and porterage. Tipping is not included for the Expedition Leader. Should you want some basic guidelines on tipping for the activities you do on your own, please see below. At the end of each trip if you felt your National Geographic Signature Expedition Leader did an outstanding job, tipping is appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline would be $10-$15 per person per day. Tipping is neither required nor expected for your National Geographic Expedition Expert.
For meals and activities not included in your itinerary, it is appropriate in Latin America to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service.
National Geographic Expedition Leader and National Geographic Expedition Expert throughout.
Our philosophy of travel is rooted in deep respect for the people, cultures, and lands we encounter. To ensure the safety of our travellers, staff, and the communities that welcome us, the possession or use of illegal drugs is strictly prohibited on all departures. While certain substances may be woven into local traditions in some regions, they are not permitted within our groups. Furthermore, any form of exploitation, including the solicitation of sex workers, directly contradicts our values. To protect the integrity of the experience and the well-being of the group, our National Geographic Expedition Leader retains the right to remove any traveller who violates these standards.
Comprehensive travel insurance is a mandatory prerequisite for participation in all our departures. To safeguard your well-being, your National Geographic Expedition Leader will kindly request to verify your physical policy details before you may officially join your fellow travellers.
When choosing your coverage, please ensure your policy includes full medical protection, featuring a strict minimum requirement of $200,000 USD for emergency rescue and medical repatriation. For complete peace of mind while exploring, we also strongly advise securing comprehensive coverage for personal liability, trip cancellation or curtailment, and the loss of luggage and personal belongings. If you intend to rely on insurance provided through your credit card, you must supply formal proof of purchase-such as a credit card statement or receipt in your name-along with explicit confirmation from your banking institution regarding the participating insurer, exact policy limits, and their dedicated 24-hour emergency contact number.

Please note that health requirements and recommended inoculations vary by destination. To ensure your well-being, it is your responsibility to consult with a specialized travel physician for up-to-date medical guidance well before departure.
We highly recommend carrying a personal first aid kit, hand sanitizer, and any essential prescription medications. Because our itineraries frequently trace paths through remote regions far from advanced medical facilities, legal regulations prohibit our National Geographic Expedition Leaders from administering any medication, including standard over-the-counter pain relievers. While local pharmacies along our route may stock familiar remedies, they are often produced under regional names, so we advise bringing the generic chemical name of any critical prescription. Before finalising your plans, please carefully review the itinerary and physical requirements to ensure your personal fitness aligns with our style of exploration. To safeguard the well-being of the group, we reserve the right to excuse any traveller from all or part of an itinerary if, in the professional judgment of our Expedition Leader, continuing would pose an undue risk to themselves or their fellow travellers.
