This area of Rome could be walked through in 15 minutes or it could take you a whole day. Geographically it's not very big but there is so much to savour and enjoy that you really need to take your time and experience the magic. This is the ancient centre of Rome where nearly every street and building is of interest.

The Spanish Steps were built in 1723 and have long been a hub for poets and artists. Even today you'll find plenty of would-be Leonardos offering to paint your portrait. Be warned though - You must NOT sit on the steps. They are now a UNESCO protected site and having a sit down on the steps could prove very expensive. Between the Steps and the Trevi is a myriad of shops, restaurants, and churches that have their own charm and personality and are well worth dallying over.

The Trevi Fountain was constructed in 1732 at the mouth of an older aqueduct from 19BC. It's the most famous of Rome's many fountains so it can be a little crowded. The best time to see it is early evening. Perhaps throw a coin in before heading into the maze of surrounding streets to find a typical Roman restaurant for dinner. Over €2000 is collected from the fountain each week which goes towards helping Rome's poor. Both the Spanish Steps and the Trevi are served by the Spagna metro station.
