Discover the magic of the Camino de Santiago with Dr. Ciara Kelly, —radio presenter, columnist, and founder of the 100DaysOfWalking initiative on this carefully designed group walking holiday along the Portuguese Coastal Way.
Enjoy the camaraderie of fellow travellers as you journey through some of the Camino’s most breathtaking coastal scenery, from the vibrant city of Porto to the historic seaside town of Baiona. Walk scenic trails in Northern Portugal, cross the Minho River into Spanish Galicia, and take in spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean at every turn.
With comfortable accommodation and daily luggage transfers included, all the logistics are taken care of—so you can relax and immerse yourself in the beautiful landscapes, charming villages, and the uniquely rewarding experience of the Camino.
Your journey concludes with a stay at the magnificent Parador de Baiona, a perfect finale to a truly enriching adventure—filled with fresh air, laughter, and plenty of good conversation along the way.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrive to Porto
Today begins our Camino adventure as we depart Dublin on our direct flight to Porto. On arrival we will travel by coach to our hotel in Portugal’s second city Porto.
We will check into our accommodation and then dependent on flight times, you will have some free time to explore this colourful city.
Stroll through the historic Ribeira district along the Douro River, marvel at the city’s famous azulejos (decorative tiles), or simply soak up the lively atmosphere that makes Porto so unforgettable.
In the evening, we’ll gather for a welcome dinner and drink—an opportunity to meet your fellow travellers and look ahead to the journey we’ll share on the Camino.
Day 2 - Porto & Povoa de Varzim to Esposende: 22km
This morning after breakfast at our accommodation we will travel by coach to Povoa de Varzim (transfer time approx. 40 mins// 35km) where we will embark on the Portuguese Coastal Way of the Camino de Santiago. Prepare for a day of sandy boardwalks and coastal paths, with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. We’ll also pass through the beautiful Parque Natural do Litoral Norte, home to unique windmills in the village of Apulia and pristine beachscapes.
Our destination is the picturesque fishing town of Esposende, where you’ll have the evening free to relax and try some of the region’s renowned seafood and Portuguese delicacies.

Day 3 – Esposende to Viana do Castelo – 24km
Start our day with breakfast and get ready for another day of beauty. Today’s route will take us more inland through serene landscapes forest trails, peaceful farmland, and small rural villages. Along the way, we’ll pass chapels, Romanesque churches, and welcoming local communities.
We finish the day in Viana do Castelo, a coastal gem steeped in maritime history. We’ll cross the iconic Eiffel Bridge—designed by Gustave Eiffel himself—before arriving in the old town. Be sure to look up to see the majestic Santa Luzia sanctuary perched high above the city.

Day 4 – Viana do Castelo to Vila Praia de Ancora -19km
Today our scenic Camino journey continues as we follow the peaceful coastal trail, filled with sea breezes, panoramic ocean views, quiet sandy beaches, and impressive lighthouses. Keep an eye out for the ancient Areosa Fortress, designed to look out for pirates along the coast.
Our route will lead us to the charming seaside town of Vila Praia de Âncora, where you’ll have the evening free. Visit the 17th-century Forte da Lagarteira, hike up Mount Calvary for sweeping views, or simply relax by the beach after another rewarding day’s walk.

Day 5 - Vila Praia de Ancora to A Guarda – 16km
Today we say farewell to Portugal and cross into Spain. Our morning walk hugs the coastline toward the historic town of Caminha, where you can admire the elegant Clock Tower and explore the charming old town.
From here, we take a short ferry across the River Minho, the natural border between Portugal and Spain. Hola España!
After arriving on Spanish soil, a gentle walk brings us to A Guarda, known for its seafood and Celtic history. From here, a coach will take us to our hotel in Viladesuso, our base for the next two nights.

Day 6 -A Guarda to Viladesuso - 17km
Enjoy breakfast before we transfer by coach back to A Guarda to continue our journey. Today’s stage blends coastal beauty with lush forest paths as we follow the Camino along the Galician coastline.
Don’t miss the striking Oia Monastery—once a Cistercian sanctuary with a commanding Baroque façade overlooking the sea. The mix of natural scenery and cultural landmarks makes this stage a favourite for many travellers.
Our day will finish back at our hotel in Viladesuso for the evening.

Day 7 - Viladesuso to Baiona – 17km
Our final walking day has arrived—and what a day it will be! We follow the coast once more, passing lighthouses, rugged cliffs, and breathtaking sea views.
Our final destination is the seaside historic fishing village of Baiona. Congratulations on your impressive Camino Walk! After taking some time to soak in your achievement, why not explore the fantastic medieval quarter or wander the promenade with beautiful views of the Atlantic and the Cies Islands.
This evening, we celebrate our incredible journey with an overnight stay at the Parador de Baiona, a majestic hotel set in a converted medieval fortress on a peninsula overlooking the Bay of Vigo. With Gothic architecture and panoramic sea views, it’s the perfect setting for our final night. We'll enjoy a celebratory dinner and drinks to toast a memorable week on the Camino.
Day 8 – Return Home
After breakfast, enjoy a little free time to soak up the final moments in Baiona or pick up some last-minute souvenirs (dependant on flight times). We’ll then transfer by coach to Porto Airport for our return flight to Dublin, filled with memories, friendships, and the satisfaction of completing our Camino journey along the Portuguese Coastal Way.
Practical Information
- Luggage Transfers:
Your luggage will be transported between accommodations each day, pick up is normally @ 8am.
- Accommodations:
Our group will stay together in a mix of comfortable standard & superior accommodations, depending on the day, providing a restful end to each day’s trek. Please note that due to seasonal variations, some facilities—such as outdoor swimming pools—may not be available during your travel period.
Walking:
Enjoy the flexibility of this self-paced journey with friends and fellow walkers along the trail. Make stops along the way for a snack and tea or coffee, there are plenty of resting places and toilet facilities on route.
Most of all don’t forget to take a moment every now and then to admire your beautiful surroundings.
Top Tips
- Prepare a day pack for each morning containing Water, Blister plasters, medication if required during the day, spare socks, raincoat, snacks etc (keep it as light as possible as you will be carrying this one along the way)
- Ensure you pack comfortable, waterproof walking shoes and be sure they are well worn before your trip. Bring some cash as the smaller villages along the way don’t accept card.
