Memphis

Memphis, Tennessee, 'Home of the Blues' and the 'Birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll'. It has produced musical masters such as BB King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Al Green and perhaps most famously Elvis Presley. A visit to Graceland, the family home and final resting place of Elvis is a must, it is the second most visited house in America, second only to the White House in Washington DC. As with many cities in the Deep South Memphis has a strong sense of history behind it; plantations, the Civil Rights Movement and the American Civil War. Memphis is now an intriguing mix of old and new with old Victorian style buildings sitting alongside shiny skyscrapers and modern malls. Downtown has seen quite the renaissance in recent years. Beale Street is probably the most famous street in Memphis and the hub of activity with its host of shops, bars, clubs, live music venues and restaurants.

Thanks to its musical heritage there are many music festivals each year in Memphis and with a host of attractions including music museums, art galleries, Beale Street, pro-sports arenas, Mississippi riverboat tours, the Memphis Zoo, voodoo shops and even downtown fortune tellers you don't have to look hard for quirky, fun and exciting things to do in Memphis. The largest city in Tennessee but yet it still retains a charming small-town feel with good 'ole Southern hospitality

Top Tips:
Whether you're a fan or just curious, you should definitely join the masses to tour Graceland as well as Elvis' recording room at Sun Studios, the birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Visit the ‘Stax Museum’ of American Soul, where artists like Otis Reading and Aretha Franklin headlined and don’t forget to stop by and visit Isaac Hayes ‘Superfly Cadillac’.

For the history buff a visit to the National Civil Rights Museum is a must and the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum for a better understanding of the city’s past and present significance.

The famous ‘March of the Peabody Ducks’ at the Peabody Hotel. Visit around 11 a.m. when the ducks make their way from their rooftop suite down the red carpet through the hotel lobby and into the Peabody Fountain where they spend their day splashing about. Join the onlookers that gather along the carpet to tap their toes to the beat of John Philip Sousa's, King Cotton March, as the ducks waddle past. At 5 p.m. the music plays again and the ducks hop out of the fountain and make their way back along the red carpet to their home.
