Mauritius lies in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean approximately 3,000 kilometres off the east coast of Africa. The island is a warm and welcoming paradise that makes it the perfect location for a romantic wedding. The sunny season is to be enjoyed all year round with the highest temperatures from November to April. Apart from the south coast, Mauritius is surrounded by coral reefs, making it an enticing playground for divers and water sports enthusiasts alike. Mauritius has a reputation for being a 'honeymoon' haven. This is not because Mauritius is only suitable for honeymooners it is more so to do with Mauritius having that very special 'something' that will make your visit a holiday of a lifetime!

Legalities and documentation for Mauritius

Wedding Legal
Legalities & Documentation Applications for proposed civil weddings between two noncitizens should reach Mauritius 2 months before the proposed date of the Civil wedding in order to enable the Civil Status office to process the documents and obtain the appropriate clearances. All Civil Weddings celebrated in the hotels should be scheduled after official working hours as the Civil Status officer does not have the right to celebrate marriages within their working hours that is between 08.30 - 16.00.

A photocopy of the following documents either in French or English (the copy must be certified in the latter case) should be sent to Mauritius when your wedding date is confirmed at least 2 months prior to the wedding - note original documents must be brought to Mauritius
• Birth certificates of the bride and groom
• First three pages of each client's passport
• Decree Absolute (if one of the parties is divorced)
• In the case of a widow/widower a Death Certificate of first spouse is required
• If name has been changed, a Deed Poll is required
• Actual profession of the bride and groom
• Actual residential address of the couple
Important Notice - A widow or divorcee is not legally authorised to remarry in Mauritius less than 300 days following her husband's death or after her divorce has been declared unlessshe undergoes a medical examination in the respective country which will ascertain that she is not pregnant. The medical report should reach Mauritius at least 30 days prior to the wedding date.

Civil Wedding from ¤450 to include the following: • Attorney's fees to draw up affidavits
• Court's fees for the swearing of affidavits
• Cost of the publication of the bans
• Driver - guide to accompany the couple from the hotel to Port-Louis, Civil Status Office and back
• Assistance of a representative while fulfilling all formalities
• Civil Status Officer's fees to officiate the wedding
• Handling fees to cover cost of faxes, telephone calls and other administrative costs
• A margin note where required
• Postal of the Wedding Certificate by registered mail

Important Notice - In case one or both of the spouses are neither fluent in English or French, the services of a translator will be required at an additional cost of approximately ¤140 - the fee includes
• legal fees for the affidavit allowing the translator to be sworn in
• car and driver to take the translator to the hotel on the day of the civil wedding
• translator's fees

Please note if the services of a translator are required they must be arranged prior to couples arrival in Mauritius.

Catholic Church Weddings Please note 60 days notice will be required prior to the couple's arrival in Mauritius to be able to take care of all the necessary details. The relevant documents should reach the Bishop of Port Louis at least 60 days prior to the wedding date.

The couple will not be able to exchange vows in a church if one of the spouses has previously been married in church. Religious Wedding Documents
The couple will have to contact their local parish priest to obtain a pre-nuptial enquiry and his dispensation in order to marry abroad
• A letter from the local parish priest specifying that both parties are unmarried and not divorced. It must also include the date on which the couple wishes to marry. A second copy of this letter is required by the wedding coordinator for follow up.
• Certificate of Baptism
• Certificate of Confirmation
• A document which certifies the publication of the bans in church
• A canonical enquiry certifying that there is no impediment to the marriage. Cost of Religious Wedding in addition to the Civil ceremony is from ¤165 to include
• Car and driver-guide to accompany the couple for a meeting with the priest to prepare the wedding ceremony
• Transportation cost from Hotel to the Church and back on the wedding day in an air-conditioned chauffeur-driven car.
• Handling fees to cover cost of faxes, telephone calls and other administration costs.

The sum of money offered to the priest is at the entire discretion of the married couple.
