Johannesburg, or Jo’burg’ as it’s more commonly known as, is South Africa's commercial and economic metropolis and a vibrant and cosmopolitan city. Much of the cities architecture is a charming throw-back to Victorian and Edwardian times but modernity is never too far away with skyscrapers sitting alongside the old. The number of trendy cafes, bars, clubs and chic fashionable restaurants is constantly growing with many of them concentrated in the Sandton and Melrose Arch areas. There are shopping opportunities a-plenty be it in the large malls or boutiques. The culture vulture and history buff will be pleasantly contented with the amount of art galleries and museums open to the public. The top tourist attraction of the city is a guided excursion to the township of Soweto where you can visit the house, now a dedicated museum, in which Nelson Mandela grew up in.
