Cha-Am / Hua Hin
Located approximately 2 hours by road south west of Bangkok, Hua Hin is Thailand's oldest beach resort. It has been popular since the 1920s and still popular with the Thai Royal Family today. It boasts a beautiful 5km sandy beach, a host of seaside restaurants, a lively night market and some great activities including golf. Most of the beaches in this area are wide and long with gently shelving waters. Water sports are becoming increasingly popular here including kite boarding, jet skiis and water skiing. Former King Rama VII built his summer palace in Hua Hin and consequently it became the favoured summer retreat for Bangkok’s high society. The palace is now open to the public and a visit comes highly recommended.
Hua Hin is undergoing rapid expansion and has risen to become one of Thailand's most cosmopolitan cities, now boasting newly constructed golf courses, a new shopping complex and a number of contemporary restaurants. It somehow manages to retain its original fishing village atmosphere and charm though.
Cha Am is approximately 20 minutes form Hua Hin and has a superb 4 mile stretch of white sand beach which is unsurprisingly the town’s main draw. It is lined with pretty casuarina trees and has plenty of space for sun loungers and parasols. Cha Am tends to be quieter and a little more laid back than Hua Hin. Although like most Thai towns of its size you will find a lively local market. Nightlife is quieter than that of Hua Hin and centers around the group of bars at Inthira Plaza and there is an increasing number of family friendly restaurants popping up.
