Evora is located in the heart of Alentejo, halfway between Lisbon and the Estremadura region of Spain, it is also known as the capital of the Prodigal’s south central region called the Museum city because of its monuments, some dating as far back as Roman times. Of the many sights there’s the Gothic cathedral, built in phases up to the 18th century and with astounding 14th-century carvings of the apostles on its ogival portal.

Portugal is the world's largest producer of cork, and much of it comes from the Alentejo region. This industry is not for people in a hurry. It takes two decades before the trees can be harvested, and then their bark can be carefully stripped only once every nine years.
