Once a small fishing village but now Lagos is one of the Algarve’s most popular resort towns and can be enjoyed by all ages. It is located along the western Algarve in the Barlavento region. Lagos offers some of the best beaches along the Algarve, history, fine cuisine, a marina, plenty of shops and a vibrant nightlife.
You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches in Lagos. The most well-known being the golden sands of Meia Praia which stretch for 4km. Batata beach is across the road from the town centre. Dona Ana Beach is well worth a visit with its spectacular rock formations. Camilo is a lovely small and sheltered beach and the sandy bay of Porto de Mós Beach is also popular. All of the beaches offer snack bars and restaurants either on or above the beach. Water sports are available on both Meia Praia and Batata.

The old town of Lagos is most definitely worth a wander around. Many of the streets are pedestrianized and lined with cafes, restaurants and shops. The old city walls still surround much of the old town and date back as far as the 16th century. The 17th century Fortaleza Ponta da Bandeira is located at the end of the main promenade and is one of the best existing examples of this type of fort. There are several beautiful old churches around the town too.
There are several boat trips available to take from Lagos, including fishing trips, dolphin spotting, cave exploring and diving trips. Sea kayaking is also a very popular way to explore the caves. The clear waters of the western Algarve are ideal for diving and snorkelling and there are diving schools to facilitate beginners as well as experienced divers. The zoo is a popular day out with families. Slide and Splash water park is approximately 20 minutes from Lagos. You can take a day trip to the pretty village of Sagres or to the ancient fortified town of Silves.
Lagos town centre is full of cafes, restaurants and bar with all tastes catered for. The main strip of Rua 25 de Abril is the hub of nightime activity with it’s plethora of bars and nightclubs. With its stunning beaches and facilities it is no wonder Lagos is such a popular holiday destination.
