Close to the Sahara desert and with the Atlas Mountains as its backdrop Marrakech’s setting is stunning. The town is divided into 2 parts, the ancient Medina (historical city) and the new city. Once you’re in the medina you can easily take in the sights on foot. For exploring the rest of the city perhaps take a bus or a petit taxi. Both are readily available. Or for the romantics out there take a caliche (small horse drawn carriage)! The newer city area is where the majority of the hotels are situated.
The medina is enclosed by 12th century ramparts and you will find all sorts of goods on sale here and in the souks! Foodstuffs, handicrafts, fabrics and leather goods being amongst the top buys. Don’t forget to brush up on your haggling skills! Djemma El Fna is the main square within the medina and a hub of activity be it day or night. Be sure to go at night time though; the highlight of any Marrakech night! Musicians, dancers and all sorts of street performers pack the square on a nightly basis. The souks begin just after Djemma El Fna. At first the sheer size of the souks may seem bewildering but with a good map you will be able to find your way around. Or enlist the help of a guide, make sure to check they provide an official service though.
You will find a little bit of calm in the Arabo-Andalusian garden which houses the lavishly decorated Saadian tombs. The 2 mausoleums are just below the minaret of the El-Mansour mosque. Adjacent to the Djemma El Fna you will find the Koutoubia mosque. The Koutoubia is to Marrakech what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. If you fancy a flutter at the tables there is a casino in Marrakech. The casino also holds cabaret shows on a regular basis. Sunway offer a range of hotels to suit all budgets so come and experience the magic and mystique of Marrakech for yourself; you won’t be disappointed!
